In the 1980s, math classes throughout America introduced a computer business simulation entitled Lemonade Stand. Purveyors sold one item, lemonade, and had to decide how many glasses would sell, dependent on the day's temperature. It was a low-resolution affair with simple beeping songs, but loads of fun. Two decades later, Monopoly Tycoon rediscovers the capitalistic charm of this simple forefather.
Although there are dozens of items to sell, real estate issues to consider, and much better music, it is still powered by the basic concept that made Lemonade Stand a fun way to learn. Monopoly Tycoon is sophisticated enough to be used in math classrooms today and be enjoyable at home as well, if players are willing to learn the ins and outs of complex consumerism.
Gameplay centers on the metropolis of Monopoly City, a town with blocks named after the famous locations on a classic Monopoly board. Players move from the famous American properties to locales from boards around the world. The streets are busy day and night and filled with people looking to purchase basic needs and luxury items. The simulation runs in a dynamic environment; day passes into night, and players have to constantly be aware of the clock to succeed.
Suffice it to say, Monopoly Tycoon is not an easy game. The in-game tutorials help start you down the path of success, but turning a profit becomes a matter of surveying people, undercutting the competition, and carefully adjusting stock to sales ratios to avoid shrinkage. Obviously, this will not necessarily appeal to the all-action shoot-em-up set; the game becomes taxing without sufficient thought and planning.
For those who invest the time, Monopoly Tycoon provides a serious test that is rewarding and enjoyable. In addition to deciding where and what to sell, players can choose to lease blocks in classic Monopoly-styled auctions. Random events, in the form of Chance Cards, add an element of luck to the mix. Finally, the game tosses in utility, railroad, and residential management for good measure. Just like the board game, there are several ways to win the scenarios, running the gamut of being a slumlord on Baltic Ave. to specializing in high rent/high pay businesses on Boardwalk.
Characters are based on the tokens from the board game, ten in all. Racecar is a hotheaded investor dressed in classic racing gear, proudly honking a horn after making a bid. In contrast, Shoe is a meek looking cobbler and careful planner, not risking nor losing much. Each AI is unique in style and personality, providing a variety of smart opponents to battle.
Although the computer doesn't cheat, it knows the rules of commerce well enough to build quickly, and sometimes ruthlessly. You must devise a solid business plan and stick with it, or else the game will dissolve into frustration and reloads. This is the rare occasion where finding a human opponent helps you learn about the game and develop a sound market strategy prior to playing the computer.
Such a complex business simulation requires a host of charts, menus, and graphs. Navigating is a snap, despite the enormous amount of data to consider. City maps are represented in two and three-dimensional forms. Players can swivel around their 3D blocks and watch buildings go up, shoppers walk into stores, and cars drive past. As day fades into night, street lamps come on and fun seekers begin to search for entertainment. The graphics are fun and informative when trying to decide where to build your next franchise.
Additionally, the music and sounds are enjoyable. Classic jazz and spry tunes featuring some excellent clarinet work provides a nice backdrop to the sounds of commerce and the street. More than once, however, the game hung up while trying to switch from one song to the next.
The game demands attention to details and knowledge of commerce models, which will put off some gamers lured in by the comfortable, familiar Monopoly logo. Those who take the time, learn the ropes, and rise to the top, might find themselves wanting to open a real lemonade stand or some other venture. Ultimately, Monopoly Tycoon is fun for corporate gladiators seeking a serious challenge in the cutthroat business arena.
Graphics: Very comfortable menus to navigate. The 3D blocks are attractive and full of activity.
Sound: The music is excellent, but the game has a tendency to freeze when moving from one song to another. Character sounds add to AI personality.
Enjoyment: It takes time and patience to develop a winning business plan, which may annoy some players wanting instant action and success. Provides several deeper levels to the basic Monopoly model.
Replay Value: Scenarios have three levels of difficulties. After winning using a slumlord approach, try taking the high road, or vice versa. Internet play provides realistic opposition.

Description of Monopoly Tycoon Windows
Read Full DescriptionRecently, there've been a bunch of different tycoon series of games. This isn't from any of them.
Monopoly Tycoon, like the name suggests, is based on the classic board game 'Monopoly'. It has all of the classic locations, as well as a set of docklands properties which may or may not be from some international version of the game I've never seen.
Unlike the board game, which took a completely abstracted approach to running your business empire, this game throws you into the daily affairs of organising a business empire.
In this game, you can run day stores (which fall broadly into two categories, food and goods), and night stores (which sell entertainment services), as well as setting up apartments and hotels. The citizens quickly learn which blocks provide which services, so organising your blocks into sets of each of these three areas is a must. Stock is bought in the morning, and maximum levels are dictated by the base size and number of floors of the business. You can set prices for the goods sold in the stores, too, and you have to keep an eye on the opposition to make sure they're not undercutting you and stealing away our business.
Businesses can be of high, medium or low quality, depending on the block you're building them on. You must keep track of what you're building because a low-quality shack on either of the indigo blocks won't attract business from the wealthy residents, and won't bring in business from the people living in low-quality blocks either.
The AI of the city's inhabitants is good, they learn where they'll get the best deals, and they will ignore you if you're not it. The class system of the townspeople is basic, but effective, the poorer people are, the less concerned they are about image and location, and more about price. The rich people don't care how much they pay, so long as they don't have to walk too far to get it, or hang around with the plebs of the city.
It is possible to lease city blocks for 25-year periods, which can bring you rental income from opponents' properties, or simply prevent you from having to pay it.
There are also city services, such as the Railways, Waterworks and Electric Company, as well as the new Telecoms and Gasworks utilities. Building up a monopoly of either of these aspects of city services is just as devastating as it is in the board game. Opponents' AI is variable, opponents tend to change radically when they're in trouble, but all are consistent with the way they're described by the game. Not too nice for the couple of AI players the design team decided to brand 'moron', though. You'll find that a player will usually follow the same tactics, game after game. Some want property, some want lots of businesses, some want the utilities, and it's possible to learn these patterns and exploit them, but they really do feel as if you're playing and exploiting the weaknesses of a personality, rather than just a bot.
Overall, Monopoly Tycoon is one of the best 'modern conversions' of popular board games you'll ever find. The underlying economic model is top-notch, the gameplay is fun and innovative, and the nostalgia is intact. The game moves at a frantic pace which may just prove too much for some, but which is ultimately true to the spirit of the board game. Highly recommended, and an induction into the Hall of Belated Fame.

I love this game. When I had the CD's years ago, I could save the game that I was in the process of playing. Now, the 'Save' button is not active. How do I save a game in progress? Thanks.

You guys can download 'Daemon Tools Lite' to your PC. And then right-click on the ISO file, and open it with Daemon Tools Lite. Or you can also open Daemon Tools Lite, browse through your PC Library, and select the ISO file. The file will be mounted as a disk in 'My PC'

This is absolutely great. I'm running this on Windows 10 and even the multiplayer mode works, at least I can connect to my Win 10 virtual machine which also runs this game :-)
OK, here is what you do (Win 10 only):
1st: Download the ISO and the patch. Don't bother with the other stuff for now.
2nd: If you want to play the multiplayer activate Direct Play via Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows Features on or off - Activate Direct Play in Legacy Components. If you don't want to play against your friends in the multiplayer don't bother.
3rd: Unzip all the files you just downloaded and find the ISO. Mount the ISO via right click on the ISO file.
4th: Install the game on your computer. Don't start the game after the install.
5th: Apply the patch next. Don't start the game after installing the patch.
6th: Unmount the ISO by going to This PC and do a right click on the virtual CD Rom and click eject.
7th: Copy or move the ISO file in a folder where you'll always find it because you'll need to mount it every time you want to play.
Now you could delete all the files you've downloaded, or save them for later :-)
8th: Mount the ISO and start the game as administrator. No need to select a compatibility mode. A little window should appear. Click on Configuration and flag No Music. Select the highest settings in Bit Depth and Screen resolution. If your max screen resolution is not listen you have to set it manually. Click on done.
9th: Click on start game and it should run. It even runs on my virtual machine.
10th: If yo want to play in the multiplayer and you have activated direct play you need to hop back on the desktop a few time with tab + alt and approve the firewall settings for this game. (I had to do this 3 times)
11th: Have fun :-)
Manual screen setting: Find the config.cfg in your games folder and open it with the notepad. Replace SysSetup width and SysSetup height with you settings. If the game doesn't start, try something else.

hey!
I can't get it passed the screen asking for the disk. as I get from previous comments the game needs to be mounted. how do I do that and when? can someone with more knowledge provide a step by step instructions. Would be very helpful.
thank you :)

Downloaded the game. Played the game for a couple hours.
Came back three days later, and it requires a CD.
I've learned that the game has to be 'mounted.' Downloading magicISO and Gizmo brought no resolution. Of course, I'm a million times outside of my sphere of knowledge, but it seems you may need a computer science degree to navigate these things.
I got two fun hours out of it when I actually never thought I'd be able to play this game again, so I'll leave with my head high.

is it just me or does this download not come with 'skirmish mode' - a fundamental part of the monopoly tycoon game. Is the download somewhat incomplete? My single player mode only has the campaign.

Thanks for the download! worked when I installed the 1.2v here: https://archive.org/details/MonopolyTycoon1.2. Ran in Windows 98 compatibility mode. Had to turn sound off, 1.6 sound fix did not work.
Blaze2019-02-19-7 points
Magic.Iso works to mount the game.
Once the patch to v1.2 is installed correctly. The loading screen stops crashing make sure to run it in 95 compatibility mode and run as administrator and it works fine :)

Dl'd first the game, then the patch. As I generally turn off sound for all games anyway, this was not an issue. Needed the patch, tho, to get it to get past the splash screen. PC using Windows 10, no problems, post-patch install. I loved this game many years ago, but lost that harddrive long ago, so it's nice to be able to replace this game. thanks!
mrpenguinb2018-11-17-1 point
Download the fix below the 1.2 patch. Extract the .zip file contents into a folder and then run the ApplyPatch.bat as Administrator. If Windows Smart screen pops-up, click 'More info' and then 'Run Anyway'.
The patch should be successfully applied!

Crashes in the opening cinematic with an error message saying something has gone terribly wrong lol
running with 95 compatibility.

Here is a proper guide on how to get the game to play music properly again: https://mcdebugrndmstuff.blogspot.com/2018/10/monopoly-tycoon-directsound-music-fix.html
mrpenguinb2018-10-231 point
To get the game running WITH music enabled, you need to get an older version of dxmasf.dll from SysWOW64 and drmclien.dll. Once you delete the old dxmasf file (gain ownership of the file) you can use a DirectShow Filter Manager to register the dxmasf.dll.
The music works perfectly after applying this fix! :D

thanks a lot!!!!

Yep gutted, no cd error
Moose Yee2017-06-104 points
I think the only way to get this working is to disable the music (start the game, click 'Configuration,' then 'no music.') There are videos and playlists on Youtube with the music for each decade, so you can still have it playing in the background.
Sparrow2017-06-01-6 points
I can't get it past the first intro movie - it crashes.
Then I've installed the update - it asks me to insert the CD (Even though I've mounted the monopoly tycoon onto the D drive)
